The concentrations of dissolved and particulate Hg in water samples from the Danshuei Estuary were analyzed to study its distribution. In addition, the surface sediment samples were also collected to determine different fractions of sedimentary Hg by a five-step sequential selective extraction method which chemically divided sedimentary Hg into five fractions, namely water soluble, human stomach acid, organic chelating, elemental Hg, and mercury sulfide. The determination of Hg concentration in samples was analyzed by the cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry(CVAFS) combined with the amalgamation system.
The concentration ranges of dissolved and particulate mercury in the Danshui River esturary were 13.42-279.77 ng L-1 and 133.48-1891.91 ng g-1 , respectively. The concentration of Hg in the Danshui Estuary generally decreased with seaward. However, higher concentration was observed in the joint junction of the Keelung River. The total concentrations of mercury in sediment samples ranged within 10.50-231.71 ng g-1. The sedimentary mercury was dominated by the mercury sulfide fraction which contributed approximate 31.47-77.18%(average 52.64%) of the total Hg pool. The elemental Hg and organic chelating was the second and the third important fraction which accounted for 12.06-24.74%(average 24.74%) and 4.44-30.63%(average 16.14%), respectively, of the total Hg pool. The percentage of human stomach acid fraction occupied 0.39-19.95%(average 5.49%) of the total Hg pool and the water soluble fraction was the least important species among sedimentary Hg. The percentage of human stomach acid fraction varied significantly between different stations. It is found that content of human stomach acid fraction exhibited in inverse proportion to the dissolved oxygen (DO), suggesting that DO plays an important role controlling human stomach acid fraction.
