Using MODIS satellite data to detect red tide in the East China Sea / 利用MODIS衛星資料觀測東海赤潮現象

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境資訊學系 / 98 / In this study, the MODIS band 443nm satellite data is considered to develop a red tide index (RI) to see the temporal and spatial variation of the red tide in the East China Sea (ECS). The daily and weekly MODIS RI images can be used to track red tide change through the China official red tide records. The climatologically monthly RI images show the red tide in the ECS mainly happen in April to June and concentrated in the coastal area off Yangtze River. Furthermore, the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the monthly RI data can be used to see the main inter-annual variation of the red tide in the ECS. The EOF mode 1 results indicate again that the red tide mainly occur in the water off the Yangtze River with the depth less than 300 m. Meanwhile, the abundant red tide mainly in spring, the minor peak is in fall, while winter is the least season to develop red tide in the ECS. The 1st EOF also shows a tremendous large variation of the red tide in the ECS during the La Niña period from the winter 2007 to spring 2008. The 2nd EOF results emphasize the seasonal vibration between winter and summer of the red tide in the northwestern and southeastern ECS, but it is the minor variation compared with EOF mode 1 results.
