A Study on Indicators of Generic Skills for Marine Higher Education Graduates / 海事高等教育畢業生基本能力指標之研究

In constructing marine higher education generic skills, viewed related marine career experts, government officers, professors and marine higher education graduates opinion. This study aimed at researching generic skills for marine higher education graduates.

The study employed the quantitative survey method. The research instrument was a self-constructed questionnaire which contained 31survey questions focusing on four dimensions: the attitude of personality, thinking ability, interpersonal relationship and vocational ability. The samples were deliberately chosen from marine career experts, government officers and professors, 90 questionnaires were administered and 73 responses were received, and from marine graduates, 270 questionnaires were administered and 215 responses were received. The data analysis methods used including average and standard deviation.

The study found the most important generic skills are as following:
1. The most important generic skills from marine career experts, government officers and professors are as following:
(1) from four dimensions
The important generic skills are as following: aggressiveness and patience ability, sincere to get along with people, independent and creative thinking ability, problem-solving ability, communication and team-work ability, emotional management ability, professional knowledge and ethics ability, good job attitude, plan and management ability, adapting the working environment ability, learning ability, foreign language ability, collect and manage information technology.
(2) over the average rate
The important generic skills are as following: aggressiveness and patience ability, communication and team-work ability, morality, sincere to get along with people, good job attitude,
adventurous spirit, emotional management ability, problem-solving ability, professional knowledge and ethics ability, foreign language ability.

2. The most important generic skills from marine higher education graduates are as following:
(1) from four dimensions:
The important generic skills are as following: morality, sincere to get along with people, problem-solving ability, independent and creative thinking ability, communication and team-work ability, emotional management ability, professional knowledge and ethics ability, good job attitude, plan and management ability, adapting the working environment ability, learning ability, collect and manage information technology, foreign language ability.
(2) over the average rate
The important generic skills are as following: good job attitude, communication and team-work ability, problem-solving ability, emotional management ability, adapting the working environment ability, foreign language ability, morality, sincere to get along with people, independent and creative thinking ability, aggressiveness and patience ability, professional knowledge and ethics ability.

3.The most important but the lowest reachable generic skills are as following: foreign language ability, aggressiveness and patience ability, independent and creative thinking ability, listening and empathy ability and morality.

4.The rate of reachable generic skills is too low, marine higher education should upgrade students skills.
