With the rapid development of urbanization, amazing population growth areas are mainly located in coastal cities, and the land use activities tend to be complex. The wanton development and spread have resulted in the damage and depletion of ecological resources. However, in the whole ecological system, the urban just like an organism that it must rely on input and output of external resources to maintain its circulation and operation. Urban development directly induces land use changes, which subsequently impact ecosystem changes. Those cities with high population density in the coastal plain will face the biggest shock of environmental change. Under the impact of global environmental change, a lot of international research organizations have realized such causal relationship and the significant effect of human activities, and they have begun to undertake a variety of interdisciplinary researches and discussions. Global land use changes and changes in ecosystem service functions have also gradually been an important part of everybody's concern.
Taiwan is a sub-tropical island which is deeply affected by the hydrologic cycle and ecological system and so on. Taiwan is crowded in particular, and the majority of the population and urban development are clustered in Taiwan’s western coastal plain. Rapid changes of land use and the over-exploitation and suburban sprawl in the peri-urban areas will lead to the abundant natural resources in Taiwan’s western coastal plain being consumed constantly and ecosystem decreasing services to urban areas. This research is based on The First National Territory Use Investigation of Taiwan (1993-1995) by Dept of Land Administration, M. O. I. and The Second National Territory Use Investigation of Taiwan (2006-2008) by National Land Surveying and Mapping Center, M. O. I., combined with the concept of Ecological Energetic Analysis, and applying spatial analysis of Geographical Information System to calculate and do the overlay analysis. It discusses the changes of ecosystem services capacity in space with the land use of Taiwan’s western coastal plain in the recent decade. In addition to understanding the contribution and importance of ecosystem service function for urban areas and the whole western coastal plain, a better understanding of the conflict of current land use patterns in the environment is given. The results of the research are expected to provide references for ecosystem maintain and the decision of land-use spatial planning in the future.
