Joseph Haydn’s Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze has four distinct versions – Orchestral、String Quartet、Clavier Reduction and Oratoria. It is a Passion Music. Musician Joseph Haydn was a devout and optimistic Christian. He tried to be associated with suffering Lord on his work. He also expected the listener can know the savior Jesus Christ through this work.
In my thesis I first explores the backgrounds of four distinct versions and futher studies “Oratoria” Joseph Haydn’s Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze in details from the aspects of Bible text and musical analysis for further reference of performers. In this thesis I study not only how Joseph Haydn depicted in music the scene of Jesus Christ on the cross , but also how he composed the grief, despair, forgiving, grace, plead and doubt of Jesus Christ and even the earthquake.
