A Study on the Job Stress of Overseas Taiwan School Principals and Their Stress Coping Strategies / 海外臺灣學校校長工作壓力及其因應策略之研究

碩士 / 國立臺北科技大學 / 技術及職業教育研究所 / 98 / This paper was to discuss the roles of principals of the overseas Taiwan School, to probe the sources of stresses they faced, and suggest some strategies to reduce these stresses.
Besides document’s investing, we interviewed ten principals of Taiwan School and five members belonged to the directors of schools’ boards or the staff of embassies. Several conclusions were made after analyzing these information:
1.There is little difference between the principles of the overseas Taiwan School and of the domestic schools on the major roles they played, but the former’s roles are more complicated and full of difficulties.
2.The most important role for the principles of the overseas Taiwan School is to be a good manager.
3.The factors affecting the performance of these roles are gender, age, educational degree, professional experience, personal characteristics, etc. The most important one is characteristics, and the least is gender.
4.The stresses of the principals mainly come from the government’s policies, the directors of the school board of directors, school’s management, administrative affairs and self-expectancy. The last source is the principal one and the stress from the government’s policies is smallest.
5.The health of most principals was affected by these stresses.
6.The principal factor to affect the sources of pressure is personal characteristics, and the least one is gender.
7.Some strategies adopted to release these stresses include recognizing the existence of problems, looking for support, thinking rationally, modifying the emotion and delaying the treatment. The one adopted most frequently is to face the problem positively, and delaying the treatment is the least used.
8.Most principals were satisfied about their treatments of stresses.
9.The principal factor to influence the strategies adopted is personal characteristics, and the least one is gender.
We hope these conclusions could be noticed both by the Ministry of Education and the boards of leaders of these schools, and be helpful for those who are now or want to be principals of overseas Taiwan School.
