This thesis concerns the ethnomusicological study of various chanting made by fish peddlers while they are trying to sell their marine goods in the fish markets.
Analysis of the contents and variation of the chanting during the peddling process made by the fish peddlers will be stated based on the fish market culture in Taiwan and ethnomusicological perspectives.
On-site researches and collections of various voices of chanting were taken place in several major fish markets in southern Taiwan, such as Donggang fish market in Pingtung County, Xingdagang fish market in Kaohsiung County and Jiangjun fish market in Tainan County.
Activities such as peddling in the fish market is one part of the human culture and music is often the peddling process itself; the characteristics of each chanting made by different peddlers help to increase sales and turnover of the day.
Fish peddlers, distributors, fish markets and every participant in this activity has transformed from one pattern to another according to the changes of the chanting during the peddling process. Today, the features and functions of the chanting in each fish market have changed from time to time due to different demand in each local fish market culture.
Activity of diversified peddling in the fish market of Taiwan, mainly with people of different regions, because different language tunes bring into, the chanting sound of fish peddlers, contact with the language and changed in time and space, for the record of fish market peddling culture, as part of Ethnomusicology, put the chanting sound from peddler in the fish market in order and write down, through the exposition of the characters, offer to the descendant the music cultural activity in the fish market to further awareness and understanding of culture.
