碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 航運管理研究所 / 99 / Urban industrial development and port development share a complementary and interdependent relationship. Kaohsiung Harbor plays a very important role in both national economic growth and urban industrial development in the Kaohsiung area.
This study aims to explore possible directions for industrial development in the Kaohsiung area led by Kaohsiung Harbor. Firstly, operations at Kaohsiung Harbor and the current industrial situation in the Kaohsiung area are analyzed. Next, an input-output model is used to create a Kaohsiung area interindustrial interdependence table based on data from the 2006 Interindustrial Interdependence Table compiled by the Director-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan. Finally, conclusions and policy suggestions are proposed according to key industries and the degree of import dependence.
This study’s empirical results and suggestions are as follows:
1. The top three key industries in the Kaohsiung area are chemical materials, steel and hardware manufacturing.
2. Key industries in the Kaohsiung area, such as chemical materials and steel, have a high degree of dependence on imports. If Kaohsiung Harbor develops specialized terminals for chemical materials, steel and hardware in keeping with environmental concerns, the increase in import and export loading and unloading efficiency for these industries should have a striking effect on leading the entire industrial development of the Kaohsiung area.
3. Key industries in the Kaohsiung area, such as chemical materials, steel, hardware manufacturing and electronic components etc., are the main input factors into the yacht manufacturing industry. Integrated with the harbor’s natural resources, development of the yacht manufacturing industry is one direction for restructuring Kaohsiung’s traditional materials industries into high value-added manufacturing industries.
