Exploring University Students’ Experiences of Work and Travel Overseas through Chickering’s Psychological and Social Development Theory / 以Chickering心理社會發展理論探討大學生海外打工旅遊經驗

碩士 / 國立中正大學 / 成人及繼續教育研究所 / 99 / Work and Travel overseas is an emergent and popular way of experiencing abroad life style outside of Taiwan, nowadays participant can utilize the salary earned from the part- time job to pay for the travel expense and arrange the trip during the break to best experience the local life. Work and Travel USA program is one of the programme that most of the participants are university students or students just earned their degrees from university, age from 18 to 28, plan to travel abroad during summer vacation. It is the key period of individuals’ psychological and social development in the stage of four- years university life, in this stage the university students would have been through the substantial growth and transformation. That is, for those university students who participate in Work and Travel USA program that need to go out of the safety zone by leaving their parents and peers to an unfamiliar environment- United States. Issues involves in how to adjust individuals’ emotions, independently solve the problems around living, developing interpersonal relationships and adjust to lives in America. All of which will have tremendous impact on the university students’ psychological and social development.

Chickering’s (1993) psychological and social development theory is aim to discuss university students’ development mission for students age from 18 to 24 , and to discuss from individuals’ psychological and social facet. It is regarded to be the most useful and has the most empirical evidences research, as well as applicable across culture. From the viewpoint of university students development theory, the main development is to be independent and has close interpersonal relationship, and this is correspond to Chickering’s psychological and social development theory of ‘Moving Through Autonomy Toward Interdependence’ and ‘Developing Mature Interpersonal Relationships.’ Therefore, the research is based on Chickering’s psychological and social development as theoretical framework, discussing the Work and Travel overseas experience and the developmental conditions of university students.

There are four research aims in this study, which are:exploring the experience of Work and Travel USA program; understanding the development of moving through autonomy toward interdependence of university students who take part in Work and Travel USA program; discovering the development of mature interpersonal relationships of university students who take part in Work and Travel USA program; discussing the factors that affect the development of moving through autonomy toward interdependence and mature interpersonal relationships of university students who take part in Work and Travel USA program. The study expects to offer insight for the unit of university students counseling, multicultural education, student basic capability and the sphere of adult education.

The study is qualitative research, by using Hermeneutic phenomenology as research method. The sample of research participant is based on purposive sampling and convenience sampling,by screening and searching with snowball sampling to choose the final 10 participants who take part in Work and Travel USA program as research objects;in terms of data analysis, thematic analysis method is been adopted.

In conclusion, there are five suggestions being brought about:
1.Under the program of Work and Travel USA, the working environment is located at remote place, but the living is stable, university students who participate in this program can plan the traveling schedule during non-duration of work.
2.University students’ independent abilities are promoted by the experience of Work and Travel USA program, which are scarce or never have in Taiwan, while seeking personal independence, university students also maintain interdependence with others. And multi-cultural interaction helps university students develop the interpersonal relationship, and then learn to respect and accept cultural differences.
3.The developments of students by the experience of Work and Travel USA program match Chickering’s psychological and social development theory, and Chickering’s claim that there are spiral developments between vectors are also verified in this study.
4.University students who participate in Work and Travel USA have different developments in independent and interpersonal relationship abilities by their gender, extracurricular experience, way to make friends, English ability and the active action to promote Taiwan culture
5.Though we can’t understand the integral development of university students by short-term overseas life experience, students transform rapidly, and when students back to Taiwan, their lives are affected by these transformations. Students also understand that they must have the different actions in accordance to the different cultures; meanwhile, they introspect that their thoughts and behavior are repressed by growth environment.
