The attitudes of residents on Sustainable Costal Tourism Development – a study on the Xinwu / 永續海岸觀光發展居民態度之研究—以新屋鄉沿海五村為例

碩士 / 清雲科技大學 / 空間資訊與防災研究所 / 99 / Xinwu Township is located in the coastal regions of the Taoyuan County and residents include the Hakka aboriginal community. Thriving in this area is the fishery, agriculture and rice plantations where resources are plentiful. This area is picturesque with open coastlines, and pastoral landscapes and as such Xinwu has recently and gradually introduced its well-known tourism and leisure industry. The main tourist center of the coastal Xinwu region is the Yon-an Fishing Port. This connects the northern and southern regions of Xinwu, with the coastal range between the Northern Lake coastal region to the Yon-an Fishing Port at 10km. With the addition of the bike path, the access to rich and diverse environments is possible. From the southern coastal region of Yon-an to He-Ke Harbor a walking and bike path is available allowing for a beautiful and vibrant recreational corridor of the southern
coastal area.

As Xinwu is rich in marine tourism resources, this dissertation discusses the five coastal villages of the Xinwu region. This included a study with a survey on the attitudes of the residents on the tourism development within Xinwu. Groups of residents surveyed include residents of differing backgrounds with differing knowledge on the impact of tourism, future development and opportunities to express opinions in future developments with a differential analysis undertaken. The research conducted included each household as a single sample. The selection criteria required individuals of over 18 years of age to participate in this study. A total of 212 out of 231 surveys were returned and subsequently used in obtaining the results with the subsequent recommendations provided to appropriate government agencies. These recommendations are relevant for decisions in future developments.

The results showed that since tourism development occurs at different rates, the impact on villages with a higher rate of tourism development showed an overall higher satisfaction rate. On the contrary, villages with a slower rate of tourism development showed a lower satisfaction rate. Most residents however seemed keen on future tourism developments within the region. A required consideration is public participation in the development and the mechanisms of regional control. This would combine the civil and government powers and by working together, the development of the coastal and recreational
tourism is possible.
