The Braille System of the Elevators in Taiwan Mass Transit-A Case Study of Taipei Metro, Taiwan High Speed Rail and Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System / 臺灣大眾運輸系統無障礙電梯點字系統之研究-以臺北捷運、臺灣高鐵及高雄捷運為例

碩士 / 逢甲大學 / 建築所 / 99 / In order to protect the blind to move freely, the barrier-free facilities have become increasingly important. Elevators are the major pass system for the blind to move in different stories of a building and the Braille system serves as the crucial supplementary guide for their directions and movements in the certain space. Taipei Metro, Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) and Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System (KMRT) are public traffic places to provide social service, where the Braille plates on the operation board of the barrier-free elevators are required by the law set for public buildings. The law in force does not completely demand for the plates’ location, the Braille system, and the Braille definitions, failing in offering a correct tangible recognition for the blind users. This study investigated and discussed the current status of the Braille systems of the elevators located in the following subjects — Taipei Metro (fifty stations), THSR (eight stations), and KMRT (thirty-six stations), and subsequently offered the relevant tactics regarding the confusion of the plates’ location, the Braille system, and the Braille definitions. The result of which would provide a feasible reference to legislate or revise the building laws in the future. The aims of this research were as follows. (1) To explore the Braille system of barrier-free elevators currently employed in the Taiwan Mass Transit, (2) to provide reasonable suggestions to improve the design regulations of the barrier-free elevators in Taiwan Mass Transit, and (3) to offer concepts of a universal design in light of the Braille system used in the barrier-free elevators in Taiwan Mass Transit.
