The effectiveness of communication media for cabin safety-An example of safety card / 客艙安全溝通媒介成效評估-以安全提示卡為例

碩士 / 開南大學 / 空運管理學系 / 99 / A wide range of factors affecting cabin safety include information that has the most direct impact on the passengers’ escape and consists of nothing more than the safety card. According to the Civil Aviation Regulations, the National competent authority requires that airlines provide passengers the safety card on the aircraft for safety information.
The foreign aviation accident investigation unit studies pointed out that the probability of injury in the emergency evacuation for passengers who did not read the safety card is three times that of those who did, and those who thoroughly read the safety card would greatly increase their survival rate.
As there have been very few studies about the level of understanding of the safety card in our country, this paper is aimed at the airline passengers of our nationality to conduct the study. The study is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on the use of the assessment methods in understanding the relevant safety card, to examine the level of understanding of the safety cards of the two major airlines in Taiwan, and compare the understanding by contrasting the safety cards of different models of airplanes in the same airline and the same models of airplanes in different airlines.
In the second part, the safety cards of a number of different airlines were examined for the series of icons, a single icon design, and the preference of design presentation. The results showed a lower understanding on land escape, water escape, and the posture for crash prevention. The understanding for most of icons was also very low, and the mean understanding scores were below 50%, indicating that the airlines of our nationality on the safety card design, although in line with the provisions of our National regulations, were inclined to be complex and too difficult to attract passengers. Even in the presentation, the icons could not make the passengers, who were unfamiliar with the aircraft and safety equipment, understand its contents.
The results of the second part revealed that the airlines’ safety card were different in the way of design presentation, and the level of the preferences and understanding. The way of presentation in photos and cartoon has its different preference groups. To use a small amount of text on the safety card will help passengers understand. The subjects indicate that it is most easy to understand icons and most like icons. The relevant research results have been provided to airlines and aviation competent authority for reference and for improvement of safety card and the way of presentation, in order to design a more attractive and effective safety card, thereby improving the passengers’ interest to read.
