The flourishing fishing industry in the 1980’s attracted many into the business, and, in the process, promoted fishing vessel production companies to new heights. With the 1989 government regulation on fishing vessel licensing, however, the fishing industry faced drastic decline, bringing with it the fishing vessel producers in Taiwan. Traditional competitors in Japan and Korea are now joined by Chinese shipyards, escalating the international rivalry for Taiwanese shipbuilders. Nonetheless, this may, in fact, prove to be a ripe opportunity for Taiwanese shipbuilders to consider a future in high performance yachts.
Small and medium size yachts market made in Taiwan have high quality, low price and customizable features, giving them an advantage worldwide. In 2008 the Taiwanese mega yacht market order ranked fifth in the word, although small and medium size yachts still form the key market of interest in Taiwan. With investments in complex aluminum and steel, the future of the Taiwanese shipbuilders looks not only more attractive but also more lucrative. As such, traditional Taiwanese shipbuilders must consider this transition to high performance yacht production in order to continue creating value and staying competitive. This thesis aims to research the current competitive advantages and weaknesses of the Taiwanese shipbuilders, the key success factors in making the transformation to high performance yacht production, and the potential role for government in this process. The research includes an indepth analysis of the success story of Jade Yachts. The research is analyzed using qualitative methods, collected through interviews with small and medium sized groups of shipbuilding experts, yacht producers, and customer officers. The results are as follow:
1. The traditional shipbuilder during the 80’s fishing boom produced almost exclusively fishing vessels in the 400-700 ton range, as encouraged by then government policies. The thriving Japanese economy being responsible for a significant of the fishing industry revenue also contributed to the expansion of traditional shipbuilding industry in Taiwan.
2. Fishing policy change in the late 80’s caused significant shrinking of the fishing industry, reducing purchase orders of fishing vessels.
3. The primary issues associated with the yacht production industry is the acquisition of resources –rental of land, supplies and skilled human resources in the technical and design departments
4. Government support role for the transition process can range from legislation of favorable policies, to training related human resources, construction of marinas, and arrangement of financial resources for the yacht producers
5. From fishing fleets to high end yachts, the key advantages to success for Jade Yachts, based on SWOT analysis, we can be found that, focusing on steel-aluminum mega yachts manufacturing from the very beginning, unlike the others in Taiwan concentrate on fiber glass yachts, Jade Yachts supported by her mother company Jong-Shyn shipbuilding group—the largest private own shipyard in Taiwan, which with the diversity of building types can avoid being affected by fading market. Enterprises can establish training systems to ensure sustainable management, those factors make Jade Yachts an unbearable status quo stands for the extremely luxury yachts yard in Asia, also the leading label in Taiwan.
