博士 / 國立中興大學 / 生命科學系所 / 99 / Continental islands in the tropics/subtropics of the western Pacific are characterized by mountainous watersheds, high precipitation, and high water runoff. To compare factors controlling periphyton biomass and productivity in the mainstems and tributary, we determined chlorophyll-specific biomass, the photosynthesis-irradiance curve (P-I curve) and community of periphyton and associated environmental factors in the watershed of the Lanyang River, northeastern Taiwan. Periphyton biomass in the Lanyang River was mainly affected by current velocity in the mainstem, whereas periphyton biomass and productivity were strongly influenced by irradiance in the headwater and tributaries. Nutrient limitation did not occur in the Lanyang River. Besides, the impact of top-down control of grazers on periphyton biomass was not obvious. Composition of periphyton community was dominant by Cymbella spp. in headwater, but the dominance shifted to Achnanthidium spp. and Gomphonema spp. in the mainstems. Our results also showed that side-channel in the mainstem played an important role as a source for the recruitment of periphyton, where can be a shelter after floods and the disturbance of rainfalls.
