The Comparison of SME Loans in Taiwan between Asian Financial Crisis and the Financial Tsunami / 亞洲金融風暴與金融海嘯期間臺灣地區中小企業放款之比較

碩士 / 國立中興大學 / 高階經理人碩士在職專班 / 99 / This paper analyzes the impact of macro and micro variables on the small and medium enterprises (SME) loan in Taiwan’s banks between Asian financial crisis and Global financial crisis. Based on the monthly data of the balance of SME loans in twenty five banks in Taiwan and utilizing multivariate regressions, we have the following empirical findings.
First, during the Asian financial crisis period, the rediscount rate and consumer loans have significantly positive effect on SME loans. In contrast, the non-performing loan ratio and the growth rates of net value and earning before tax have significantly negative impact on SME loans. Moreover, the size of bank has significantly negative effect on SME loans. Therefore, the expansion of banks has no benefit on the balance of SME loans.
Second, on the one hand, the growth rate of stock market index and the growth rate of banks’ net values and consumer loans have significant positive impact on SME loans during the global financial crisis. On the other hand, the growth rate of money supply, rediscount rate, and non-performing loans have significantly negative impact on SME loans.
In sum, the macro and micro variables have significant effect on banks’ SME loans in Taiwan during both financial crises. However, these variables have substantially different impact between Asian financial crisis and global financial crisis. For example, the growth rates of stock market index and money supply have significant effect only during the global financial crisis. The rediscount rate has negative impact during the Asian financial crisis but positive impact during the global financial crisis. Therefore, we conclude that both macro and micro variables have significantly different effects on financial crisis and these effects depend on the area and the size of financial crises.
