The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different altitudes on the seed germination and seedling growth of Mikania micrantha H.B.K. The effects of environmental factors (constant temperature, alternate temperature, osmotic potential, NaCl concentration, light quality, pH, oxygen, and buried depth) and outdoor seedling growth on the Mikania micrantha H.B.K. germination of seeds. For the seeds of M. micrantha H.B.K. sampled at the altitude of 1192.2 m, the highest seed germination was found under the constant temperature of 25℃and the alternated temperature 30/25℃, respectively, at the. The seeds of M. micrantha H.B.K. which were sampled at the altitudes of 961.2 m and 1192.2 m could germinate under the water potential from 0 to -0.8 MPa and the germination percentage of seeds under the water potential from 0 to -0.1 MPa was higher than 80%. The seeds of M. micrantha H.B.K. could germinate under the treatments of NaCl solutions (0 - 1.0 %). The seeds, which were sampled at the altitude 1192.2 m and under the treatments of NaCl solutions (0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 %), showed the highest germination percentage. Under the pH treatments, the seed germination of M. micrantha H.B.K. was higher than 28% at the pH values from 3 to 11. And the seeds, which were sampled at the altitude 1192.2 m and under the pH values from 5 to 8, showed the highest seed germination percentage. Under the irradiation treatments, there was higher than 70 % seed germination of M. micrantha H.B.K. during the exposures of red, far-red, blue, violet, and white light. The seed sampled at the altitude 1192.2 m showed the highest germination percentage and those sampled at the lower altitudes had relatively low germination percentages. Under the enough oxygen and irradiation conditions, the seed germination of M. micrantha H.B.K. could be approaching to 76%; nevertheless, the seeds sampled at the altitude 1192.2 m showed the highest germination percentage. Under the treatments of bury depth, the emergence percentage of seeds was decreasing with increase of buried depth. With 0 cm bury depth, the emergence percentage was 70 %, and with 1.0 cm bury depth, the emergence percentage was decreasing down to 10 %; nevertheless, the seeds sampled at the altitude 1192.2 m still had the highest emergence percentage. In addition, for the seeds of M. micrantha H.B.K. sampled at the medium and high altitudes, the seedling growth responses (i.e. plant height, root length, shoot fresh weigh, shoot dry weigh, root fresh weigh, and root dry weigh) would be superior.
