Taxonomy and biology of the berycid fishes in Taiwan / 臺灣產金眼鯛科魚類之分類及生物學

碩士 / 國立東華大學 / 海洋生物多樣性及演化研究所 / 99 / The alfosino (Berycidae) is one of the economically important target fishes for deep-sea fisheries of the world. Taxonomical revision and biology were examined for the berycid fishes in Taiwan. Specimens were collected from landings of the deep-sea bottom trawling, angling and long-lining along the eastern and southern coasts of Taiwan between January 2009 and May 2010. Four berycid fishes, Centroberyx rubricaudus, Beryx decadactylus, B. mollis and B. splendens, were identified. Because only one individual of Centroberyx was collected, biology of the berycids was conducted only for the three Beryx fishes in this study. Sizes of the fish were different among species, which B. decadactylus was the largest, B. splendens intermediated, and B. mollis the smallest. Lengths at sexual maturity in female and male were estimated to be about 450 mm and 400 mm for B. decadactylus, 300 mm and 250 mm for B. mollis, and 380mm and 300mm for B. splendens, respectively. A combined examination of both whole-otolith and sectioned-otolith methods indicated that ages of the fish were 1-15 yrs for B. decadactylus, 1-9 yrs for B. mollis and 3-9 yrs for B. splendens. The calculated asymptotic lengths differed among species, which the 513 mm for B. decadactylus was the largest, 460 mm for B. splendens intermediated, and 423 mm for B. mollis the smallest. The growth coefficient of 0.31 yr-1 for B. splendens was higher than those of B. decadactylus (0.22 yr-1) and B. mollis (0.19 yr-1), indicating that B. splendens was with the highest growth rate. Indices of growth performance for the three Beryx fishes ranged 4.53-4.76, which were similar to those of Beryx fishes worldwide.
