Study on life history of the five pomacanthid fishes in Taiwan / 臺灣產五種蓋刺魚科魚類之生活史研究

碩士 / 國立東華大學 / 海洋生物多樣性及演化研究所 / 99 / Pomacanthidae are common coral reef fishes with worldwide distribution. They are of commercial values being captured as marine ornamental fishes. In order to enhance the understanding of their life history, 446 pomacanthids including 163 Apolemichthys trimaculatus (AT), 116 Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis (CS), 12 Genicanthus semifasciatus (GS), 145 Pomacanthus imperator (PI), and 10 Pygoplites diacanthus (PD) were collected monthly from local fisheries by-catches in coastal harbors of Taiwan between September 2006 and December 2010. Life history traits of reproduction, early life history, age and growth were elucidated by examinations of gonad and otolith. Lengths of the fish ranged 130.2-234.1 mm (AT), 126.6-280 mm (CS), 135.9-251.0 mm (GS), 59.4-372.0 mm (PI), and 67.8-259.2 mm (PD). Gonadosomatic indices suggested that spawning seasons and the lengths at sexual maturity were from January to November and 130 mm (AT), March to September and 163 mm (CS), and February to September and 248 mm (PI). Microstructural examinations of daily growth increment count, mark formation and increment feature changes on the sagittal plane of polished otoliths indicated that pelagic larval durations in early life history of the fish were 15.6 day (AT), 12.1 day (CS), 16.2 day (GS), 11.8 day (PI), and 15.2 day (PD), respectively. Maximum ages of the fish were determined to be 12 yr (AT), 9 yr (CS), 14 yr (GS), 16 yr (PI), and 9 yr (PD) by counting the annuli on the transverse plane of polished otolith. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth formula (VBGF) by length were 219.7 mm for asymptotic length and 0.21 yr-1 for growth coefficient (AT), 280.6 mm and 0.06 yr-1 (CS), 342.9 mm and 0.06 yr-1 (GS), 842.45 mm and 0.03 yr-1 (PI), and 286.3 mm and 0.23 yr-1 (PD). A correspondence among inflection points of the VBGF by weight and the lengths of sexual maturity indicated that the reproductive investment of fish initiated as growth increased for AT and CS, on the contrary, growth decreased for PI. These results provide important inferences on reproductive biology, age and growth of pomacanthids among genera and species, which would be beneficially applied to artificial propagation of the fish.
