Purposes: To examine the connection between the stage of exercise behavior and the exercise behavior determinant and the different effect individual background has on the stage of exercise behavior and exercise behavior determinant.Method: Students from Stella Maris Ursuline High School in Hualien county completed self-administered questionnaires. All of which were adapted from previous literature. t-test, one-way ANOVA, and chi-square test were used to assess the concurrent and construct validity of the staging algorithm. Results: (1) In the stage of exercise behavior, the preparation stage has the highest population ration (54.8%), followed by the maintenance stage (15.9%), contemplation stage (12.9%), precontemplation stage (8.4%), and finally the action stage (8.0%). (2) The different individual background (gender, age, BMI, sports attendance, parents’s education level) has significant effect on the stage of exercise behavior. (3). Exercise behavior determinant in the demographics showed significant differences except for age and gender. (4) There are significant differences in perceived exercise benefits, perceived exercise barriers, exercise self-efficacy, and social support in different stage of exercise behavior.
Conclusion: In Stella Maris Ursuline High School, most students are in the preparation stage. The result shows the lack of regular exercise and the need of strategies to increase exercise attendance. Since there is strong relation between the attendance of sports clubs and exercise behavior determinant, there should be more sports clubs in school, supported by teachers and parents. The higher the stage of exercise behavior, the higher the perceived exercise benefits, the exercise self-efficacy and social support, and the lower the perceived exercise barriers.

Key words: the stage of exercise behavior, social support, exercise self-efficacy, perceived exercise benefits, perceived exercise barriers.
