碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 國語文學系碩士班 / 99 / The scenarios of Li Ruzhen’s Flower in the Mirror and Mao-Teng Lo’s Journey to the West Ocean both deal with long-distance sea travels, visits to various exotic foreign countries, and interactions with diverse people and culture. This thesis aims to conduct a comparative analysis contrasting those two works through the perspective of “Travel Literature.”
Chapter One is the introduction, which describes the motive, purpose and research scope behind the author’s choice of these two works. This introduction also redefines “Travel Literature”, outlines the research approach, and systemizes the research structure.
Chapter Two commences the application of “Travel Literature” to these two works. Focusing on external aspect, this chapter discuses the background for exotic country travelling. Through the perspectives of “Prosperity of Sailing Industry” and “The Purpose of Long-Distance Travels”, this chapter analyzes the influence of historical context on the creation of these two works.In addition, the contrast between official and civil parties in these two tests is examined through the organizations of governmental and non-governmental commercial ships.
Chapter Three is to study the views of these two works on exotic countries. Through comparison between text and original text, the countries mentioned in these two works are examined in details. This chapter also analyzes and summarizes the geographical concept, sailing routes and geographical locations of the mentioned countries in the texts.
Chapter Four continues the discussion of the external aspect of Travel Literature and using the traveler’s encounters as the main theme, it examines objectively through “Navigation Description,” “Nature Scenery” and “Culture Customs”. This chapter then enters the discourse of The Conflict and Exchange of Foreign Cultures.
Chapter Five accentuates the internalized aspect of travelling and it is divided into four themes. “Satire” is to convey the author’s ironic views on the society. “Idealization” is to express the author’s romanticized views and it is followed by the process of “Departure and Return” to explore the author’s inner transformation. It is concluded by “Introspection” for investigation of the author’s views.
Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis, which is to broaden the definition of travel literature and widen its scope. Lastly, this chapter explores the research prospect of travel literature on Flower in the Mirror and Journey to the West Ocean.
