Preliminary Studies on the Taxonomy of Synaphobranchid eels ( Synaphobranchidae, Anguilliformes) off Taiwan / 臺灣合鰓鰻科魚類之初步分類研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 99 / In Taiwan, synaphobranchid eels distributed in midwater 200- 400 meters to 1000 deepwater meters. Most of them are benthic fishes. Dysommid eels feed on crabs and mantis shrimps, and synaphobranchid eels feed on cor- pse. In this study, the specimens were collected from Yilan Daxi, Suao, Hua- lian, Taitung Chang Bin, and Pingtong Tongkong collect .Also borrowing and identifying some specimens in Academia Sinica, National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, National Museum of Marine Science & Technology, to identify some misidentified specimens and unpublished species of Synaph- obranchus and recognize the differences of Dysomma and Dysommina in this study. And we have found the different dorsal fin origins of Synaphobranchus between Pacific and Atlantic.
Synaphobranchidae totally have 40 species in the world, and we fou- nd 16 species in Taiwan. This thesis has recognized 3 subfamilies, 7 genera, and 20 species, including 3 unidentified species. Dr. Yu-Yun Cheng had ever done the studies on the taxonomy of Synaphobranchidae before, inclu- de that we added some recognized characters of the dentition, type of scale, cephalic sensory pores and comparative study, and clustering analysis by morphometric characters in this thesis.
The thesis compiled the keys of the genera and species in Synapho- branchidae, offered the descriptions of each subfamily, the references of Synaphobranchidae in Taiwan, the diagnose, geographic distribution, rema- rks, and provided for further research and reference.
