碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋生物研究所 / 99 / Green turtles, Chelonia mydas, spend the majority of their life in the sea, only emerge to nest during the reproduction season. Thus, little is known about their diving behaviors. Recently, Time–depth recorders(TDRs) has used widely in the study of diving behavior of nesting females in many places. The diving behavior can also different due to the influence of different environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the diving behavior during the interesting period of the green turtles nest on Lanyu Island. The experiments carried out from June till September in 2007 and 2008. We deployed TDRs on six gravid green turtles to record the dive depth and time. We identified individual dives into seven different types. Statistical analysis showed that green turtles mainly employed U–type dives. Previously studies demonstrated that U–type dives were serve as resting dive. It is estimated that sea turtles spend inodorous energy during the nesting. Thus, the gravid females tend to rest during the internesting period. Results of this study showed that, all the nesting turtles on Lanyu Island would mainly perform resting dives in order to storage energy for the next nesting event. Females would decreased their U–type dives and consequently increase their Shallow dives a few days before the next nesting event in order to search for the previous nesting beach to emerge. The distribution frequency and average maximum nesting dive of the U–type dives during the internesting period would also different from individual to individual. This depth may be the most energy–saving depth for sea turtles. We can use the diving pattern to understand the behavior of sea turtle indirectly. These information will allow us to estimate the range of activities of nesting green turtles on Lanyu Island, and facilitate the design the of nesting habitat conservation on this island.
