From Mining Industry to Cultural Industries: the Transformation of a Coastal Mountain Settlement Jinguashi / 從礦產業到文化產業:濱海山區聚落金瓜石的變遷

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋文化研究所 / 99 / Rumors that Taiwan produced gold began in the 16th century. In addition to records in literature, gold was indeed found during Guang Xu of the Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty established a management bureau as the number of gold diggers gradually increased. Among places that produced gold in Taiwan, Jinguashi was the most prominent. During the Japanese Colonial Period, advanced mining technologies and machinery were imported to dig gold, bringing Jinguashi’s gold output to its peak. At the time, Jinguashi was even known as the number one precious metal mine in Asia. Yet, following the fall of the mining industry, changes in the environment, and population outflow, the once prosperous and bustling Jinguashi turned into a desolate settlement in the mountains. However, thanks to the combination of locals’ self-awareness and the concept of community empowerment, communities, hostels and artists were brought closely together, gradually developing the diverse cultural industry of today featuring Jinguashi’s mining industry of the past. Moreover, the Gold Ecological Park that was established by the government in 2004 integrated Jinguashi’s precious nature, mining industry remains, landscape feature, historical memories and cultural assets. As a result, Jinguashi today is a settlement with a cultural atmosphere, historical memories of the mining industry and natural landscapes of the mountains and sea. This study explores the transformation of Jinguashi from mining industry to cultural industries, examines difficulties encountered and effects of this change, and further offers suggestions after generalization and introspection.
