碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境資訊學系 / 99 / The Hsin-Dian River is the second largest tributary of the Danshuei estuary in northern Taiwan. More than six millions of population, exceeding one quarter of Taiwanses, live in the catchment area of the Danshuei River system. Due to over emphasizing the economic development in the past three decades, it is known that the Danshuei River system has been seriously polluted by anthropogenic activity, mostly from the domestic wastewater discharging into the river system. In order to understand the current state of the water quality of the Hsin-Dian River and the Danshuei estuary, the present study analyzed the nutrients concentrations of the Hsin-Dian River and the Danshuei estuary by means of two surveys and used the water quality index (WQI) to assess the water quality.
This concentration ranges of the studied water parameters are as follows: pH, 7.25-8.01; dissolved oxygen, 1.06-8.03 mg/L; phosphate, 1.51-7.69 μM; silicate, 19.71-147.1 μM; ammonia, 47.6-195 μM ; nitrite, 1.82-7.14 μM; nitrate, 1.99-46.9 μM; and chlorophyll a, 0.15-6.14 μg/L. The WQI values obtained in the two surveys ranged within 13-21 and the water quality belonged to E-F according to the EPA classification. Surprisingly, the WQI values found in the Danshuei lower estuary was also low. The reason for this is attributed to the low tide during the sampled periods and to the ammonia concentration was quite high, which worsens the water quality. The ammonia source is probably from the domestic discharge and from the pore water release due to the reducing environment.
