碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 99 / Tramp shipping market is characterized as being highly cyclical, volatile, capital intensive and highly affected by factors of politic, economic, climate. It needs to adopt risk management strategies to prevent the possible loss in the market, and ensure a stable income or cash flow for a tramp shipping company.
This study adopts both expert interview and literature review to explore the feasible strategies of risk management in tramp shipping business. This thesis concludes that the key issues of risk management for a tramp shipping company are shown as below:
1. The management of cash flow which is effected either by the freight revenue, or by the cost of ship operations.
2. The strategy for ensuring of the stable revenue, to maximize the profit in each voyage, and to secure stable income from a charter party.
3. The shortage of ship crew and the increasing operation costs are common in the shipping industry. The outsourcing of the ship operations to a ship management company might be one of the feasible strategy of solutions.
4. The price of a ship will directly affect fixed cost of ship. By means of the break-even-point method, it will help judge the reasonable price of a ship which is essential to the risk management in shipping business.
5. Besides the reducing of operation cost, to pay attention to the credit of the traders in a charter party is also important. It is worth to maintain a long term good relationship with a creditable owner or charterer.
