Fundamental Conception of Marine Knoweledge for the Fourth and Sixth Grade Students of Elementary School in Taoyuan County / 桃園縣國民小學中高年級學童海洋基本知能之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 99 / The objective of this study is to assess the understanding of the fundamental concepts of marine knowledge for the 4th – 6th grade students’ in Taoyuan County based on questionnaire survey. The factors such as school location, grade level, gender and family socioeconomic status related to their knowledge were examined using statistical analyses such as descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis.
The results were summarized as follows: The extracurricular reading is the main source in obtaining marine knowledge followed by classroom teaching, and TV broadcasting. The parental figures are the least. The students are lacking of understanding in the cognitive domain and the overall score for this category was 51.7. However, the students showed more positive attitude on marine conservation knowledge which fall in the affective domain. In the psychomotor domain, the majority of students were aware of the safety aspect related to marine activities. However, they were less capable of identifying marine-related songs and demonstrated physical strength in marine activities. Comparing with the students in urban and suburban schools, those in coastal schools have less percentage of swimming capability. This study found that the students in urban and coastal areas have a better understanding of marine knowledge. The understanding of marine knowledge is positively related to age. The 6th grade students demonstrated more understanding of marine knowledge than those of 4th grade. However, no significant difference was found between sexes. Students’ understanding of marine knowledge is correlated to their family socioeconomic status. The students from the families in middle to high socioeconomic levels have a better understanding of marine knowledge, comparing with those form low socioeconomic families. This study found that there is a significant positive relationship between the affective and psychomotor domains; the cognitive domain has a medium to high positively correlation with the top five teaching themes of marine education.
