碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系所 / 99 / With growing demands for ocean resource development, it is obviously a trend in the future that building large research vessels will be a primary consideration.
As a research for reference purposes, this study is based on Ocean Researcher No. 2 as the primary research vessel and in association with past data from Ocean Researcher No.1 and No.3. Then, further analysis by statistical charts into several categories is included. Also further analysis of problems and difficulties encountered in the past during research such as equipments, climates and/or operations, etc., including differences between research vessels in different ocean areas, different weather, different situations, different equipments, and even differences in tonnage of vessels that could cause ocean research vessel building and construction difference.
This study is based on total on site sailing days over the past 5 years (2005 – 2009), which includes data from 192.8 days of Ocean Researcher No.2 as well as 196.4 days of No.3. Data from No.1 and No.3 from north Taiwan and south Taiwan respectively in the past 5 years indicate differences in ocean situations and climate between north and south Taiwan. Particularly, all the data indicate one interesting phenomenon: the weather in south Taiwan is more stable than that of north Taiwan. This research will act as a good reference and decision making guide for building new research vessels in the future.
In addition, another potential issue is the vessel crew member’s experience, knowledge and skills, which are getting more and more serious in recent years. For example, Ocean Researcher No.2 crew average age is 53.8 year old, which obviously is due to the lack of new blood coming into the research crew team. Consequently, it will lead to crew aging and inefficiency. Therefore, human resource development is another issue that needs a lot of attention in the future. Furthermore, management level seafarer recruiting is more and more difficult in a competitive market. Without a total solution for new crew recruiting, training, wage system, welfare package, insurances, etc., it will lead to a serious situation for research in the near future.
