Exploring the Myth of Changes in《Shanhai Jing》and 《Guben Shan Hai Jing Tushuo》 / 《山海經》與《古本山海經圖說》中的變化神話研究

To exist, human is eager to have the power to face challenges and then wins after death. Large numbers of deformed “corpses ” are depicted in《Shan Hai Jing》
Human holds a strong belief that bodies could be revived to others in nature. This is so called “Deformation Myth” and “Myth of changes” as well. It is largely contained in 《Shan Hai Jing》and therefore it is the main body of this Chinese classic text.
The purpose of this study is to explore the “Myth of changes” and view of life and death in《Shan Hai Jing》. Three parts are included. The first part is to explore the primitive thought and belief related to the “Myth of changes” in Shan Hai Jing. The following three dimensions are discussed: (1) primitive thoughts of primitive men which are animism, totem belief, and witchcraft thought (2) funeral culture and soul belief in ancient time (3) view of life and death in Confucianism and Taoism

The second part is first of all to explore the contents and origins of nine myths of changes in《Shan Hai Jing》, in which we can see rivivals after suddenly turn of events and secondly to explore the meanings and spirits of rivivals.
The third part is to sum up the pictures related to myth of changes from《Guben Shan Hai Jing Tushuo》 by Ma Chang Yi and then to study differentiation in texts and pictures. The purpose of doing this is to have more complete understanding of the thoughts in myth of changes.

Myths of changes in 《Shan Hai Jing》reveal primitive men’s enthusiasm and fear toward life, show In-depth consciousness that life moves in ciircle and express their spirits and beliefs in immortality.
