The Connection of Culture Consumption and Life Style: the Case of “Kafka on the Shore” / 文化消費與生活風格的形塑-以「海邊的卡夫卡」為例

碩士 / 元智大學 / 藝術管理研究所 / 99 / Modern Live House appears mostly in the style of compound space. Since its development varies in diversity, the information collected by the community is more abundant. This phenomenon also reflects how information of niche culture is exchanged in Taiwan and what its future tendency can be. This study adopts “Kafka on the Shore,” one of the gathering places for indie bands, as the study subject, aimed at analyzing how contemporary culture consumption is formed in the style of compound space. The study focuses on the compound space shaped by culture consumption, space, and the atmosphere, interpreting the field space and life style by applying the theories of culture consumption and life style to various study subjects with different roles and viewpoints. From the view of the producer, how does the owner think of the atmosphere shaped by space? From the view of the consumer, what kinds of consumers with what type of life style will choose a compound space to spend money? The reason why consumers spend money is more than satisfying their basic physical and psychological needs now. More of the time, they consume for the value of the product itself and the expression of individualism. By studying the case of “Kafka on the Shore” this study is hoping to understand the abundant social meanings suggested by the life style of compound space and to comprehend the characteristics shaped by different cultural theories. Since life style is a representation of how people live, it has a close relationship with consumption culture and social space. In this case, the study observes the links between culture consumption and space to discover their structural relationship based on the case of “Kafka on the Shore.”

This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, while the second chapter explains the concept of life style, culture consumption and consumption space. Based on Bourdieu’s theory of culture consumption and the relationship between the meaning of life style and culture consumption, this chapter interprets how tastes, habitus, and the operation of capital lead to diverse life styles. On the other hand, consumers of different life styles will choose different fields of consumption to demonstrate their tastes. This chapter will also discuss why the constant interaction between humans and space generates the space of consumption. The third chapter is the study design, while the fourth chapter focuses on analyzing the links between compound space atmosphere and community. The interpretation and classification will be made on the basis of statistic analysis and interviews. The last chapter is regarding the conclusion and future studies.
