Study on the insulin-resistance improving effect of the combinational food consisting of roselle, green algae and bitter melon / 洛神花、綠藻及苦瓜組成之複合食材改善胰島素阻抗之研究

碩士 / 中原大學 / 生物科技研究所 / 100 / Due to the dietary habits changed, lots of modern dietary behaviors cause people vulnerable to insulin-resistance, metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome related chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. However, in the world full of artificial chemical compounds, how to eat healthier and nutritious has become a primary lesson to everyone. Purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of improving insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome by the combinatorial food consisting of roselle, green algae and bitter melon.
In this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: the basal group (B) fed with chow; the control group (C) fed with 60% high fructose diet; the treatment 1 group (T1) fed with 60% high fructose diet plus 1% roselle extract, 0.8% green algae extract and 0.1% bitter melon extract and the treatment 2 group (T2) fed with 60% high fructose diet plus 0.5% roselle extract, 0.4% green algae extract and 0.1% bitter melon extract. The study lasted for 10 weeks. Blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol and the response of oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were analyzed.
Our data showed that high fructose feeding led significant increase in fasting plasma glucose, insulin, triglyceride, cholesterol and systolic blood pressure in group C. According to the result of OGTT, we also found that the Area Under Curve of plasma glucose and insulin in group C were larger than that in group B, and suggested that high fructose diet induced insulin resistance in group C. Compared to group C, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance and insulin resistance were improved in group T1 and T2. According to the results of our study, the combinatorial food consisting of roselle, green algae and bitter melon may ameliorate insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in fructose fed rats.
