Not only does it shorten the traveling time between cities, but also increase the availability of local connection. Moreover, the population growth and the neighboring industrial activities are stimulated along with it. Furthermore, it enhances the regional economic development. Because of its unique landscape, Jiaoxi has become as a popular spot for tourists in Taiwan. However, the external connection of Jiaoxi is substantially limited because of the barrier of Hsuehshan (Mountain). With the operation of Hsuehshan Tunnel and after the full connection to the western highway network system, the traveling time between Jiaoxi and Taipei is decreased and the transportation standard is raised. It makes more interests in attracting more people to Jiaoxi to participate in traveling events and increases the tourism and recreation needs of Jiaoxi area.
This research is to understand the impact of Hsuehshan Tunnel operation to the tourism activity in Jiaoxi. The questionnaire survey was done at tourist attractions and the data was collected from tourists who were experiencing tourism events in Jiaoxi. First, the differences of traveling experience between individual and group are from the descriptive statistical analysis and the traveling experience in Jiaoxi before and after the Hsuehshan Tunnel operation of respondents will be analyzed. Secondly, is to measure the tourism activities of the travelers in Jiaoxi after Hsuehshan Tunnel operation.
The results show: travel patterns in age structure, education level, area of residence and companion type exist significant differences if kids are along with during the travel and other traveling experience attributes are also related. Tourists stay in Jiaoxi shorter than before Hsuehshan Tunnel operation. The patterns found self-planning travel itineraries, with children, residence, age, personal income, gender and other factors will influence the behavior of the tourism activities for planning.
