The Writings of Childhood in Taiwan Female Prose / 台灣女性散文家的童年書寫—以琦君、林海音、林文月和張曉風為中心

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 台灣文學系碩博士班 / 100 / The thesis concentrates on Taiwan female prose works, especially their writings of childhood. Considering the representative ,generation in Taiwan female prose and experience of childhood, I choose Chi-Chun、Hai-Yin Lin、Wen-Yueh Lin and Hsiao-Feng Chang to research the meaning of childhood and relationship with modernity. I try to probe into their writings of childhood in two main aspects—content and form.
From the content of the writings of childhood, I discuss the most relevant topic to oneself gradually—family, education and homeland. Family and education play significant parts in literary authors’ life and their production. Therefore, we can observe the different ways of writings by these topics. Taking Chi-Chun as an instance, she describes her family and childhood in a sentimental connection, while Hai-Yin Lin tends to sketch the action. On the other hand, Wen-Yueh Lin presents her childhood to think about “who is she” while Hsiao-Feng Chang connects her experience in China with nationality.
Moreover, the writings of childhood and homeland also show their self-identity and distinguishing features. For example, Chi-Chun delineates her hometown like beauteous wonderland while Hai-Yin Lin depicts her life in Beijing vividly, including the depraved appearances. On the contrary, Wen-Yueh Lin likes considering “where do I come from” when Hsiao-Feng Chang just wants to search for her Chinese culture roots to do the writings of childhood. The distinct reasons and ways of writing cause assorted literature styles in prose.
From the form aspect, I research the writings to discover their differences, from the whole structure to literature skills. Besides, I try to explain the intimate relationship between writing childhood and modernity. That is also a way to know why the works of four female proses are so different. Finally, to observe the meaning and value of the writings of childhood, I compare the writings with literature trend in 1950’s and 1960’s like nostalgic and modernism literature. By analyzing the features, the writings of childhood show the process from nostalgic and modernism characteristics.
To sum up, the writing of childhood is a kind of modernity. The thirst for writing childhood memory itself represents the aspiration for a belonging place, which is a factor of modernity. The female prose generations from Chi-Chun to Hsiao-Feng Chang also interpret the gradual process to modernism. The writings of childhood in Taiwan female prose are not only the best illustrations of modernism literature but also the precious treasure in Taiwanese literature.
