Comparison in mathematical achievement between Beijing, Shanghai, and Taiwan’s elementary children under the premise that learning ability is equivalent---A study based on application questions / 在學習能力等同的前提下,北京、上海與我國學童數學成就之比較---以應用題為例

This study aims to find out the mathmetical achievement difference between Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan elementary children, while exploring the distinction of the math textbooks from these regions.
Questionnaire survey is adopted as the research method. The sampling is from certain city and county of the same region. Meanwhile, the author took stratified random sampling, using the self-developed questionnaire of application questions based on the research objectives.

According to the analysis, the main findings of the study were:
I. Children’s competence value at “basic pattern” reads 0.1627 logits; that at “extending pattern” reads 0.3556 logits; that at “advanced pattern” reads 0.9646 logits.
II. Children are significantly different in both competence values and middle values of various advanced levels.
III. In “extending pattern” and “advanced pattern”, children’s equivalent value reads 0.1158 and 0.0366 logits. Therefore, it is figured out that children from Beijing and Shanghai are superior to Taiwan children in the competence values of advanced level.
IV. Children’s learning results are interactively affected by genders and situational subjects.
V. Being capable of solving simple questions does not necessarily cause advanced deducing proceed more smoothly.
VI. Carelessness is the most reason why the elementary children able to solve more complicated questions cannot do the relatively simple questions right.
