To understand the operating structure of the oyster farming industry at Yun-Lin County, Taiwan, this study conveyed the profitability and cost function of partial oyster farmer by using questionnaire survey method in 2009. Using Translog Cost Function to estimate the production cost function of oyster aquaculture, and in the process to establish the co-relation between various input parameters (i.e. wages, seed, machinery, growth delay and others), the finding is expect to serve as reference to oyster farmers in formulating their production decisions. Through output of this empirical model one can estimate the short-term economy scale and the flexibility of cost parameters as well as complementary and compatibility amongst various factors, the results further indicating the oyster farming costs composed mainly variable costs (60.2%), and most of these variable costs come from salary cost, currently salary costs attributes 36.17% of the total, followed by 16.06% for the oysters seed. In 2009 oyster farming can generate an average net profit of 306,800 NT dollars per hectare, with ROI (Return of Investment) rate of 33.34%, showing Yun-Lin oyster farming business maintains healthy profit. The density of the economy is 0.64461, which is greater than 0, indicating good economies of scale. The relationship between growth-delay-elements versus other elements remains negative, while others such as the seed elements versus wage elements, mechanical elements versus wage elements, mechanical elements versus seed elements, other elements versus wage factor, other factors versus mechanical elements, growth delay elements versus wage elements and growth delay elements versus seed elements are complementary and are positively related.
