This paper employs the ICOADS marine observational data, the NCEP meteorological data, and the NOAA OSCAR ocean current data to study marine environmental factors affecting shipping routes in the North Pacific. These results are further compared with the marine information associated with the North-Pacific shipping routes. Major findings are summarized as follows:
Major ports of America and Europe are mainly located in the middle latitudes, leading to major shipping routes in the mid- and high-latitudes of the North Atlantic. Two major shipping routes are characterized: the northern routes between North America and the northern Europe and the southern routes between North America and the western Europe-the Mediterranean Sea.
Major factors affecting the North-Pacific routes are navigational distances and seasonal marine environments, while port locations and seasonal marine environments affecting the North-Atlantic shipping routes.
In winter, the appearance of the Icelandic low forces the major routes in the North Atlantic to shift southward about 600 miles, while the existence of the Aleutian low makes shipping in the North Pacific to decrease in the mid-latitudes.
In summer, the appearance of the subtropical high makes the entire 200-600N regions of the North Atlantic as the major shipping regions, while the North Pacific features the intensified mid-latitudes shipping in accordance with the disappearance of the Aleutian low.
