Analysis of major Shipping Routes in Southern Hemisphere / 南半球主要航路特性分析

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海事資訊科技研究所 / 100 / This study finds that the major shipping routes in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) primarily owe their existence to economic activity and geographic locations of the ports, rather than to climatic factors of the marine and atmospheric environments. Major routes in the SH are described as follows:

 The South Pacific: The routes center at Australia and connect with New Zealand, America, and Asia with 7 major shipping routes:
1. East Australia-South America,
2. East Australia-East Asia, Northeast Asia,
3. West Australia-East Asia, Northeast Asia,
4. East Australia-Southeast Asia,
5. West Australia-Southeast Asia,
6. East Australia-West Australia,
7. Australia-New Zealand.

 The South Atlantic: The routes center at South America and connect with North America, Europe, and Asia with 3 major shipping route:
1. South America-Europe,
2. America, Europe-South Africa,
3. South America-North America.

 The South Indian Ocean: The major routes are mainly a bypass of shipping from Asia and Mid East to Europe and America. They have no connection with the economic activity of Africa. There are 4 major bypass routes:
1. South Africa- Southeast Africa,
2. South Africa-Mid East,
3. West Australia-Mid East,
4. West Australia- Suez Canal-Europe.

Analysis of the major shipping routes in the SH are compared with those of the Northern Hemisphere for their similarity and discrepancy. Results of these comparisons should provide better pictures for global shipping routes.
