The Evaluation of Maritime College Student Internships System For Taiwanese Shipping Companies / 我國航商對於海事院校學生海上實習制度之評估

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 航運管理研究所 / 100 / Taiwan, as an island country, substantially depends on maritime transportation in its import and export trades. Therefore, Taiwanese shipping companies have high expectations for maritime school students to be competent to take on shipping and maritime work upon graduation. In order to prepare the graduates for the standard required by the maritime industries, maritime schools developed on-board internship courses to bridge the gap between practice and theory. This article discusses the expected performance, anticipated quality of the sailing and maritime engineering interns, and finally the internship system. The potential derivative benefits and difficulties are also discussed.
The following are some discoveries reported in this article. The maritime industry requires the following five qualifying characteristics from their student interns, in order of importance: work ethic, adaptability, interpersonal relationships, emotional stability, and English ability. Of these five, the interns’ English ability was the one element that the maritime industry felt most needed improvement. In addition, many factors affect the benefits and difficulties the maritime industry derives from the internship system. And the certification of Special Professional and Technical Examination of Seafarers is the most determinative factor for admissions consideration. The findings in this article can provide higher education maritime academies important information for training students to become quality maritime personnel.
