碩士 / 國立高雄師範大學 / 地理學系 / 100 / Recently, researchers bring up that the development of shore platform is controlled by subaerial erosion process resulting the cliff retreat (Stephenson &; Kirk, 1998, 2000b; Kennedy and Dickson, 2007) . Column block rocks fall from top of cliff or cliff face accumulate at cliff base or on the shore platform in Penghu rock coast. This study applied Rock Mass Strength (RMS) method and cliff-forming materials, and finds out that the major factor of cliff collapsing is weakened layer at the bottom of column joint basalt cliff. Afected by marine process for a long time, weakened layer was eroded a notch because of repeated wet and dry cycle of weathering. At the same time, characteristics of cliff bedding , the vertical joints, and development of tension cracks of the upper basalt layer, prompting cliff failure and mass movement. Further more study analyzed the relationship among this RMS factors of cliff to the width of shore platform. The results show that the weakened layer at the cliff base at its rock mass strength characteristics with has correlation the width of shore platform, implying that cliff retreat is an important process to shoreplatform development in Penghu.
