Influential Factors of Containership Newbuilding Order and Liner Shipping Company Shipbuilding Decision-making / 新造貨櫃船數量與定期航運公司造船決策影響因素之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 運輸科學系 / 100 / Most of liner shipping companies trend to order larger container ships for enlarging their economic scale and reducing unit transportation cost, this mega trend causes higher and higher costs of new building ships. Thus the shipping companies will be carefully when making the shipbuilding decisions. On the other hand, the marine transportation market is affected by the global economic and trade which have been fluctuating tempestuously for these recent years. As for the fleet deployment decisions of the companies, especially in ordering new building ships, when the economic and trade growth increase as their expectation, they place the orders on new building ships. However, the decisions could not always catch up with the tremendous change in the trade. Once the economic situation is getting worse, the new building ships will cause a lot of troubles such that the shipping companies cannot earn profit yet, but suffer the loss of sunk costs immediately. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the number of new building container ships, and also to explore the factors of the shipping companies in the shipbuilding decisions, and finally we compare those factors to understand the similarities and differences between the decision-making processes.

Through collecting related historical data and surveying the top management of the companies in Taiwan by questionnaires, the results by analyzing the external data shows that oil-related factors, such as West Taxes Crude Oil Prices, Dubai Crude Oil Prices, North Sea Brent Crude Oil Prices and 380cSt Bunker Prices Rotterdam, these indices have high influence on the number of new building ships. On the factors influencing the companies’ decision making, the most important four factors are reducing unit cost, freight rates, charter hire and new building ships prices which dominate about 50%. This shows that these four factors affect the new building ships decisions intensely.
