A Survey of ‘Career Uncertainty’,‘Hardness’ & ‘Self-esteem’ on Marine andFishery Vocational High School Students / 海事水產類科高職學生之生涯不確定、堅毅性格與自尊之調查研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 教育研究所 / 100 / This research aims to explore ‘career uncertainty’, ‘hardiness’ and ‘self-esteem’ and their relationships. The questionnaire will measure ‘career uncertainty’(the career uncertainty scale developed by Lin and Chen (2010) which is revised by ‘Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale’ (MUIS)(Mishel, 1981), ‘personality hardiness’ (the personality hardiness scale is developed by Lin and Cheng (2011) which is revised by ‘Hardiness Scale’ (Bartone, Ursano, Wright, & Ingraham, 1989) and ‘self–esteem’ (edited by Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Based on the stratified sampling, there are 1236 students in 4 marine and fisheries vocational high schools involved in this research.

The results show: (1) the rank of career uncertainty from high to low is ‘career anxiety’, ‘career expectation’, ‘subject selection’ and ‘career coping’; the rank of hardiness from high to low is ‘control’, ‘challenge’ and ‘commitment’; the self-esteem is morn then medium level. (2) the higher score on career uncertainty shows lower self-esteem; compared with the level of hardiness, the high group of career uncertainty is lower than low group with significant differences. (3) based on first canonical correlation analysis, ‘commitment’ and ‘control’ will influence ‘career anxiety’ and ‘career coping’; based on second canonical correlation analysis, ‘self-esteem’ and ‘challenge’ will influence ‘career anxiety’ and ‘career coping’; based on third canonical correlation analysis, ‘absolute thinking’ and ‘control’ will influence ‘career expectation’.

It is proposed that the results can be implied in three ways. Firstly by individual students to explore their career interest and ability for reducing their career anxiety, secondly by school authorities to set up the career development program for promoting career coping strategies, cultivating hardiness and upgrading self-esteem, and thirdly by educational authorities to understand individual various personality of students for constructing multi-career development strategies in order to increase their self-esteem and self-value.
