Typhoon is an extreme weather event commonly found in Taiwan during summer. According to the statistics of the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), Taiwan experiences an average of 6 typhoons per year. These typhoons often bring strong wind and heavy rainfalls, which subsequently cause environmental changes and disastrous damages. However, our understanding of the influence of typhoon on fisheries still remains largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the effects of typhoon on torch-lighted fisheries in the water off northeastern Taiwan using typhoon history information, hydrological data (remote sensing-based), and fishing logbook. A total of six typhoons, HAITANG, TALIM, BILIS, KAEMI, FUNG-WONG and MORAKOT, were selected as the study cases after a screening of 30 typhoons recorded during 2005-2009. After the passage of theses typhoons, the surface sea temperature (SST) cooling events were evident in the investigated sea area as the their SSTs decreased from 28.62 ± 0.29°C for the week before the passage of theses typhoons to 27.98 ± 0.42°C for the week after the passage of these typhoons. The increase in the upwelling area was also reflected by the decrease in SST as the maximal upwelling area increased from 124 ± 267 to 6203±4702 km2 after the passage of typhoons. Similarly, the primary productivity was also found to be enhanced after the passage of theses typhoons as their chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration increased from 0.46 ± 0.13 to 0.66 ± 0.18 mg m-3. There was also a shift in fishing ground for torch-lighted fisheries in the water off northeastern Taiwan after the passage of typhoons as the majority of fishing vessels were found to aggregate in cold and nutrient-rich water area. The CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort) of squid also increased from 126 ± 161 kgd-1boat-1 to 138±52 kgd-1boat-1 after the passage of typhoons.
