A study on the workplace adaptation of Taiwan women seafarers / 台灣女性船員職場適應之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系所 / 100 / With the changes on social and cultural aspects, women’s level of education is generally raised and economics is independent, women are not confined to family anymore. Due to the rise of feminism, they fight for equality in the workplace and take to the streets to carry out their dreams. Women start to have their own business, and they are not only family caregivers. The woman seafarer in sailing workplace has to conquer the male-dominated career. Besides overcoming the work environment of displacement, isolation and away from home, workplace gender discrimination is a major test for women seafarers. The way the women seafarers in Taiwan promote themselves to get jobs from ship owners. Once they have a chance to work on board, they will show their amazing abilities to work and demonstrate their ambitions to break the stereotype of women in society.

This study uses qualitative research to do in-depth study on career experience of women seafarers, they are deeply influenced by Patriarchy culture, gender stereotypes impact women in the workplace is like a pair of shackles, women seafarers are considered trouble makers on board and their labor forces are thought restricted. The result of research shows that the more women seafarers is acclaimed by their supervisor and coworker, the more active they are at work for better performance and breaking through the way people look at them.

In addition, with regard to the choice between family and job that women seafarers faces with, according to the result of interview, they have different views, the workplace life of women seafarers is often questioned, it may be interrupted because of family reason, but that doesn’t mean all woman seafarer will give up their sailing dreams due to family life, gender stereotypes in sailing career often restrict their developments in sailing career. We hope to present woman seafarer’s true face by this research and affirm their work attitude and abilities; they are going to expand their own blue sea.
