碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 兒童文學研究所 / 100 / The interior of human beings is not as simple and complete as the exterior. Most of Ursula K. Le Guin’s imaginary works narrate the voyage from the outer space into the inner journey, in other words, metaphors of the exploration of egos’ growth and recognition.
The Earthsea Cycle, a masterpiece by Ursula K. Le Guin, is not only a classical fantasy work, but also a Bildungsroman. Being confronted with different challenges, the main characters have their own tasks to be dealt with. The subject of this study is Ged the Wizard and has invoked the structure of Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in order to analyse the adventure of “Home-Away-home” and “Departure-Initiation-Return”, process of pursuit and growth; and investigate this text to see how it concretely present the “shadow” and “individuation” in Carl Gustav Jung’s analytic psychology. What does this text’s presentation mean and symbolize? How does Ged integrate the ideas from Taoism’s “Natural and Inactive”, “Being in the source”, ”Lives”, and “Balance and Equilibrium” with the western fantasy literary works? If we take this text in comparison with a human body, Campbell’s Heroic theory is like “Skeleton”; Jung’s Individuation theory is like “Flesh”; Laozi’s ideas is like “Blood”, and Ged’s exploration is just like the “Skin” adhered to the surface of the body.
This text provides speculation practice for readers. By way of reading Ged’s “The Earthsea Cycle”, we can hopefully undertake the responsibility of a member from nature and create a more tactful and positive life through Ged’s personal speculation and investigation that how a man would smoothen his own spiritual barrenness and balance his interior conflicts in order to be inclined to a completely whole “Man”.
