碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 公共與文化事務學系南島文化研究碩士班 / 100 / Affected by the new museology theory, the local museums in Taiwan develop quickly. Many local cultural developments gradually make sure their subjects and peculiarities with the help of local museum systems. However, while more local indigenous museums are established, it reflects that the indigenous people need museum professional assistances to deal with the collapse of their tribal traditional cultures to preserve their traditional culture spirits. Also, the local indigenous museums usually have few visitors because they cannot work with their own local characters and specific professionals because of the differences between the cultural software and hardware. So, they have planned a series of improving programs with their own professional techniques, resources and other museums’ supports to improve their functions. With hope, they can again take the responsibilities of the cultural reproduction.
The purpose of this research is to look into the local museums’ operations and practices to discuss the ideas and changes brought to the indigenous museums, which are affected by different cooperating methods, especially with the central and local authorities, also the web connections of large museums leading small museums plan. The researcher takes the example of cooperation of National Museum of Prehistory and Bunun Museum of Haiduan Township to observe how the role of a curator changes. In addition, how the role of a curator goes influences how a local museum future developments. The role of a tribal curator is more important on showing the equality to the knowledge producing structure of museum and tribe. With the subjects of the local indigenous museums, it gives a chance to return the tribal thoughts, techniques and ideas to the exhibitions. Nevertheless, the above ideals still requires continuous experiments, practices and participants to be fulfilled with, and to sustain the local museums’ local subjects with various powers to gain more cultural varieties.
These improving programs might only be a short-term mission for the long-term developments of local indigenous museums. Assistances from big museums outside might also be temporary, but if the local indigenous museums can survive without them? This is a question. As a result, the researcher hopes to exam the experiences of the role of a curator becoming a tribal curator to reflect the sustainable developments of the local indigenous museums in the future.
