碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 戲劇學系 / 100 / The study is based on Roland Barthes’ Symbolism (Roland Barthes, 1915-1980) to analyze the symbols of the space in Chekhov’s (Anton Chekhov, 1860-1904 ) The Seagull (1896). The main spaces in this play are lake, stage, dining-room, sitting-room, inner rooms, and Sorin’s estate. The space in the play is composed by “system” and “syntagma”. Through the signification which is composing by symbols in the play, such as spaces, time, characters, plots and properties, we could found the connotations of the symbols and the ideology. There is a special Russia era in The Seagull, that reflects the daliy life of Russia people, the desolate estate, and the undesirable aristocracy life mode. Through Roland Barthe’s Symbolism applied to the analysis of the play and discoding the symbols of the spaces in the play, this study provide another interpretation; in the other hand, this study could be a referance material for performing.
