碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 國際企業學系 / 100 / Differing from the extant literature of foreign direct investment, this paper attempts to take firm size as the core issue and investigates the relationship between firm size and entry mode choices of foreign direct investment, and further, analyzes the impact of firm size on overseas performance and how the environment affect entry mode choices of a firm. This study uses qualitative research method of case in-depth interview to provide analysis and discussion of Taiwan listed corporation. The empirical results suggest that: (1) Enterprises are based on their own operational direction and overseas executive intent of directors as the main decision of entry mode choices of foreign direct investment. (2) The larger a firm size is, the more inclined a firm chooses to be a sole proprietorship while entering overseas markets. In addition to the limitation of foreign investment policy of the host country, a firm chooses to be a joint venture. (3) The smaller a firm size is, the more inclined a firm chooses to be a joint venture while entering overseas markets. But joint venture is a kind of strategic consideration, a firm will choose to be a sole proprietorship eventually while a firm size is getting larger. (4) In terms of corporate resource, the larger a firm size is, the better the performance of foreign direct investment is; In terms of business management, there is no significant correlation between firm size and the performance of foreign direct investment. (5) At a higher level of the environment uncertainty, majority of enterprises are inclined to enter overseas markets by signing a contract, while minority of enterprises are inclined to be a sole proprietorship to engage in foreign direct investment.
