Exploring the Relationship between Oil price and Performance of Domestic Shipping Industry / 油價與國內航運公司經營績效相關性之研究

Because of the primary means of transportation is shipping, will be affected by environmental factors like crude price and economic prospect. This research will explore the relationship between crude price and the operating performance of domestic shipping companies.
This research use multiple regression analysis to establish the model of relationship between 6 financial rates and 4 factors that will affect the operating performance of shipping companies, observe the effect of delayed of crude price, and compare container shipping companies with bulk shipping companies.
Finally, for domestic shipping companies, when crude price increase, gross profit margin and operating profit margin will decrease and increase variable cost. And this effect will exist in many seasons. The effect of crude price in pre-tax net income and net income will depends on the strategy of shipping companies, there is no obvious difference between container shipping companies and bulk shipping companies. Crude price have no effect in revenue growth rate. And the economic prospect will highly affect the performance of shipping companies, especially for container shipping companies because of more international trade. So, the managers not only find the way to decrease oil cost, but also evaluate the economic prospect precisely and develop suitable strategy.
