Among a number of his piano works, Joseph Haydn's piano sonatas has played an important role in music history. Besides his piano sonatas, Joseph Haydn's variation pieces also have great influence during the development of variations in the eighteenth century. As one of his five piano variations, Andante with variations in F minor (Hoboken 17/6) is the most representative works.
Variations in F minor, which has a set of double variations, is quite different from his other four variations. This piece make up double theme variations. Haydn uses parallel major and minor as contrasting style in the passages. This work alternates theme A and theme B in succession.
Moreover, dotted rhythms, syncopation and fast figurations are in common useage to develop variations. Upper second and lower second comprise of melody. And the melodic contour of this piece consists of parallel motion and contrast motion of seconds. Haydn makes root position of Neapolitan chords in harmonic progressions, modulating down the chromatical scale in the bass. Because of the uniqueness, the root position of Neapolitan chords play a climactic role in minor theme and the following variations which create the tension and turning point.
Due to Haydn's creative approach in variation composition at his time and few related researches in the area of his keyboard variations, the purpose of this thesis is to explore and analyze his variations in F minor (Hoboken 17/6), and serve as an introduction that more people can understand Haydn's importance not only from his piano sonatas but also from his piano variations. First, this thesis discusses how Haydn imitates the classic style from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), and how he created an unique and innovative techniques. Second, the research approach includes the background, structure and composition style. Last, based on research findings, this thesis provides recommendations and suggestions for performance in different perspectives so that performers can interpret this piece better.
