From Chou Wen-Chung’s YÜ Ko to Explore the Creative Concept and Practice under Eastern and Western Culture/Pei-Jung Chen Concert / 從周文中《漁歌》探討東西方文化下的創作理念與實踐/陳佩蓉作品音樂會

碩士 / 東吳大學 / 音樂學系 / 100 / Chou Wen-Chung is a composer, an educator, and a scholar. He is always concerned about the rejuvenation and development of Asian music. He combines the spiritual intension of the Eastern and Western music, displayed in the early works YÜ KO.
On studying YÜ KO, the author of this thesis finds the dual characteristics of tradition and modern elements in its whole structure.
In terms of traditional elements: On horizontal melodies and vertical sounds, its pitch takes a pentatonic scale as the core, based on the fundamental key and assisted by the changes in the seven sound scale. In the aspect of sounds, the composer tries to imitate the sound of the ancient Chinese zither by means of remarkable performing skills. In view of speed and rhythm, rhythm atmosphere plays an important role. On the musical form, the composer adopts the musical methods of ancient Chinese zither, which accentuates an introduction, elucidation of the theme, transition to another viewpoint, and summing up.
In terms of modern elements: The composer not merely creates the modern and novel sense of sounds, but also significantly increases an artistic conception of the simulation of the sounds of the ancient Chinese zither. The frequent speed changes and changeable time signature tremendously designates its “modernity.”
Consequently, the aforementioned feathers of YÜ KO specify its dual characteristics of tradition and modern. d.
