An Analysis of US and PRC’s Role During 1996 Cross-Strait Crisis:Dramaturgic Perspective / 1996年台海危機美國、中共角色分析:戲劇論觀點

碩士 / 國防大學政治作戰學院 / 政治研究所 / 100 / This thesis focus on realizing U.S and China’s real attempt during the 1996 cross-strait crisis by dramaturgic approach. The sociologist Erving Goffman analyzed how people interact in our everyday life with the concept of the theater metaphor. He thinks everyone is a “actor” who plays different character in different scenes, and player can build up his ideal image on “front stage”, but he can reveal his real thought on “back stage”.
During the 1996 cross-strait crisis, U.S and China hided their real purpose because of national interests. The purpose of this thesis is to examine U.S and China’s hidden behaviors by using Goffman’s theoretical framework of dramaturgic approach.
The thesis results indicate that U.S is “peace-keeper in Asia Pacific area” on “front stage”. In fact, U.S hides her real thoughts because of its national interests, and plays as “hegemony” on “back stage”. As to China, China is “sovereign-keeper” on “front stage” and on “back stage”. Through Goffman’s dramaturgy, we can clearly know U.S and China’s purpose and roles.
